National Day celebrated on 25th of June commemorates Slovenia’s independence from Yugoslavia which was declared in 1991. On 25th the initial independence acts were considered and on 26th the formal declaration took place.
The result of the declaration was a Ten-Day War/ Weekend War with Yugoslavia. The war was fought between the Slovenian Territorial Defence and the Yugoslav People’s Army. It started on the 27th of June, 1991 and lasted until the 7th of July, 1991. Slovenia won the war and it ended with the signing of the Brioni Accords.
National Day is a key moment in history since it marks the independence of a country which for ages fell under the control of various empires and unions, among others Austria-Hungarian and finally Yugoslavia. Slovenian Independence had impact on the independence of other countries in the region which also wished to become independent. It marked the beginning of the Yugoslav Wars across the region between 1991 and 2001 within the former Yugoslavian territory. Tensions increased as more and more republics within Yugoslavia declared independence alongside Slovenia.
National Day is a free day in Slovenia.
