Mr Jordy Clemens, the adelman of the Municipality of Heerlen launched officially the unique ‘’Beleefroute’’ ( Experience route ) around the theme: Heerlen 2000 years of existence in the Dutch Mine Museum in Heerlen on July 5.
Heerlen museums and the Municipality of Heerlen combined forces to initiate this project.
Mr Jordy Clemens told us: ‘Heerlen is surprisingly rich in its heritage and the fascinating stories it has to tell. Thanks to this cooperation of local museums there’s finally the opportunity to experience all these stories in a comprehensive and easy way.’
An interactive route makes it possible to see, hear and experience how inhabitants of Heerlen lived in the most important periods of the past 2000 years. It will give you definitely a feeling of stepping inside a time machine. You can visit for example the finest Roman archaeological sites in the Netherlands, step into the life of the Little Sisters congregation founded in 1872 whose sisters took care of the elderly, ill, mentally and physically disabled and children. During your walk you can learn about the mine times or admire the Glaspaleis /Schunck ( Glass Palace) an amazing national monument built in 1935 which accommodates among others a museum, music school and library.
So, the route connects the main historic locations including the Dutch Mine Museum, SCHUNCK, Savelberg Convent and Thermal Museum as well as some murals and the Maankwartier, a new district of Heerlen.
It can be followed with a special book guide which costs € 3.50 and is available online from July 5 via 2000jaarheerlen.nlThe programme is available for adults and kids (from six years old) and it is a nice family activity since it offers various assignments for the kids. The language of the book and audio is Dutch. The guide book is also sold in the participating museums, and via the Tourist Office. The guide offers various discounts on entrees or consumptions in the museums and with the book guide you can visit all participating museums for free.
If you are walking the entire route and are planning to visit all the museums, it will take you at least half a day. You can also cover the route on various days.
Heerlen is definitely worth visiting because of its rich ristory, stories it has to tell, but also due to many other factors such as fvarious events which are organized here regularly ( see the events schedule here: https://www.heerlen.nl/evenementen.html ), great repertoir of the local theaters ( check it out here: https://www.plt.nl/programma), Music podium Nieuwenor ( more info here: https://www.nieuwenor.nl/tags/dance#programma ), great restaurants, cafes, shops with the ‘’Woonbulevard’’ ( see more info here: http://www.woonboulevardheerlen.nl ) and many more. Last but not least it is necessary to mention that Heerlen won in 2017 Dutch Street Art Award 2017, in the category local government and the Parkstad region where Heerlen is located won in 2016 Tourism for Tomorrow Award 2016 a World Tourism prize ( read more here: https://www.communications-unlimited.nl/region-parkstad-wins-tourism-for-tomorrow-award-in-dallas/) .
So, come and visit Heerlen. It has fascinating stories to tell and it is ‘’gezellig’’!
