Schelmentoren Comes to Life This Year: Medieval Fort

Dutch city of Heerlen is set to gain a unique historical experience: starting in December 2025, the Schelmentoren, one of the oldest remnants of medieval Heerlen, will open its doors to visitors. This centuries-old tower tells the story of Heerlen through time, from its role as a defense post and prison to its status as cultural heritage. Additionally, the surrounding public space, with a special focus on the Schelmenhofje and Betaplein, will be redesigned. Renovation of the tower is set to begin at the end of March 2025.

The Schelmentoren is part of Landsfort Herle, which celebrates its 800th anniversary this year. Jordy Clemens, alderman for heritage, culture, and city center development, states: “Everyone knows the Schelmentoren at Pancratius Square. But who has actually been inside and experienced its unique medieval atmosphere? There are so many fascinating stories to tell about what happened here. This year, we’re finally going to do that.”

Storylines

The medieval story is already being told at Hoensbroek Castle, and now the Schelmentoren will be added to this experience. After the renovation, visitors will be guided through history via three historical characters, each representing a different era on each floor. Using a combination of authentic objects and multimedia, the medieval city will be brought to life, offering a unique glimpse into Heerlen’s history.

Redesign of Public Space

The design and timeline for the Schelmentoren renovations can be viewed at centrum.heerlen.nl/landsfortherle. In addition, both the Schelmenhofje and Betaplein will undergo a transformation. Residents are actively involved in shaping the new design.
