The Dutch Mining Museum and Hoensbroek Castle in Heerlen have been awarded a Michelin Star in the “Travel & Culture” category of the international Michelin Green Guide. This prestigious recognition signifies that both heritage sites are considered attractions of international tourist interest. It is an acknowledgment that aligns perfectly with Heerlen’s ambitions as a city of heritage, culture, and hospitality.
The Michelin Green Guide awards stars to exceptional tourist destinations that are well worth a visit. Alderman for Culture & Heritage Jordy Clemens is proud of this distinction:
“That two heritage gems from Heerlen have received a Michelin star says everything about the strength of our culture. This is a proud moment for Heerlen and an encouragement to continue investing in our story, our heritage, and our future.”
The recognition comes at a particularly special time—during the Year of Heerlen’s Heritage, in which the city’s history is being celebrated and honored through countless stories, memories, activities, and projects.
Dutch Mining Museum and Hoensbroek Castle
In recent years, the Dutch Mining Museum has undergone an impressive transformation and has become a central place where Limburg’s mining history is shared with a broad and diverse audience. Hoensbroek Castle—one of the largest castles in the Netherlands—connects visitors with the past through a unique combination of history, experience, and storytelling. In 2022, Hoensbroek Castle was named the most beautiful castle in the Netherlands by the ANWB (Royal Dutch Touring Club).
With this recognition, Michelin highlights that Heerlen is a city where culture and heritage are not only preserved but actively shared and brought to life. The municipality, together with its cultural partners, continues to strive for a sustainable and welcoming city—one that embraces memory, connection, and innovation.
