From the vibrant capital of Kosovo, Prishtina—with its buzzing streets, rich cultural landmarks, great shopping, and lively nightlife—we headed to what many international travelers call the most charming town in the country: Gjakova.
We had the privilege of being shown around by none other than H.E. Mr. Dren Doli, the Ambassador of Kosovo to the Netherlands. With his guidance, we explored this cultural and historical gem that truly captures the heart and soul of Kosovo.
Gjakova enchants with its Ottoman-influenced architecture, laid-back café culture, traditional kullas (stone-and-wood tower houses), and breathtaking natural surroundings. Nestled near the dramatic Accursed Mountains, it offers a mix of history, beauty, and yes—amazing food!
But Gjakova also carries a painful past. During the Kosovo War, it suffered immense destruction and loss. Yet the strength of the people of Gjakova—who have been rebuilding their hometown with love, pride, and unwavering resilience—shines through in every restored street, preserved tradition, and act of remembrance.
