Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is taking part in the ceremony commemorating the Liberation Day of the Netherlands. Together with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Dick Schoof he signed the “Wall of Freedom” at the Visum Mundi building, where 80 years ago German forces in the Netherlands surrendered, marking the end of World War II in that region.
Before his Freedom Speech, he was introduced in a short film that presented his life under communism, the fall of the totalitarian system, and his ongoing efforts for freedom and democracy. Solidarity—both literally, referring to the Solidarity movement, and figuratively, as the cooperation among people and nations—was and remains a vital part of his life.
In his Freedom Speech in Wageningen Polish Prime minister said:
“Many Polish soldiers died fighting to liberate the Netherlands, but their memory lives on. I am deeply grateful to the Dutch government and local communities for keeping their memory alive and for their firm commitment to commemorating them.”
“On days like these, we bow our heads to honour the victims of that horrible war. A war which, as we must never forget, started with the German attack on the Polish military base at Westerplatte on September 1, 1939.”
“Let’s not turn a blind eye to the resurgence of evil. The experience gained 80 years ago tells us that only when stand together, can we overcome it. Facing the threat posed by Putin’s Russia, we need to deepen our European and transatlantic ties.”
The time of Europe’s carefree comfort is over. Today is the time of European mobilisation around our fundamental values and our security. If we want to survive in this dark hour we must stay strong.
Europe was once called an economic giant, a political dwarf, and a military worm. We must once again be as valiant, as brave and as strong as the Polish soldiers who fought 80 years ago on your soil. We owe it to them and to the future generations.”
