Day of Freedom: Poland

During the parliamentary elections on the 4th of June 1989 Polish people voted on the Citizens’Committee, an opposition group around Lech Wałęsa, which led to the end of communism in Poland. This in turn led to the wave of changes across Central and Eastern Europe.

These were the first elections in Poland since the Communist Polish United Workers Party lost its monopoly in April 1989.

Solidarity won all of the freely contested seats in the Sejm, and all but one seat in the entirely freely contested Senate. Tadeusz Mazowiecki became the first Prime Minister after the Soviet oppression and a peaceful transition to democracy started in Poland and the CEE region.
