CEE region among winners of Oscars 2024

This year Polish and Ukrainian presence was felt strongly during the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. During the gala, the AMPAS presented Academy Awards-Oscars in 23 categories honoring films released in 2023.

Among the winners were also the CEE productions.

The ‘Zone of Interest’, directed by Jonathan Glazer, with an international collaboration between Poland, the UK, and the US, received 2 prestigious Academy Awards. The picture won the Oscars in the categories Best International Film and Best Sound.

“20 Days in Mariupol” won best documentary at the 2024 Oscars directed by Mstyslav Chernov. In his acceptance speech he said it was the first Oscar win for Ukraine and added “I wish I had never made this film.”

And last but not least, the Dutch cameraman Hoyte van Hoytema has won an Oscar for the film Oppenheimer. He had been rejected from the film academy in Amsterdam, followed studies at the film academy in
Łódź. His mother was a daughter of a Polish-Jewish anaesthesiologist. The writer Miriam Guensberg is his aunt. His grandfather was a Polish liberator of the Netherlands.
