29th European Film Awards in Wroclaw, Poland

 

 

 

The Gala of the European Film Awards: EFA – the most prestigious award granted to European films by members of the European Film Academy since 1998 will be presented this year in Wroclaw, in Poland on the 10th of December. Every second year, awards are presented in Berlin, where the Academy is established and in even years award ceremonies are held in major European cities.

 

EFA is the most important award for the European Film industry which compares to the American Oscars. It is awarded by the members of the European Film Academy. Prizes were awarded for the first time in 1988, and the statuette for best film was granted to Krzysztof Kieslowski for “A Short Film About Killing” . In subsequent years, among the winners were, among others, Roman Polanski, Lars von Trier, Pedro Almodóvar, Paolo Sorrentino and Michael Haneke. The guests of this year’s ceremony will be members of the European Film Academy, this year’s winners and nominees, among others actor Pierce Brosnan – the guest of honor, awarded for contribution to the world cinematography, screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière – for lifetime achievement, actor Hugh Grant – nominated in the category: European actor 2016 for his role in the film “Divine Florence”, the actress Isabelle Huppert nominated for her role in “Elle”, the director Maren Ade nominated in five categories for the film Toni Erdmann and directors Pedro Almodóvar and Ken Loach. Weekend 9-11 December will be filled with celebrations of the European cinema, premières, and meetings with the filmmakers. Due to the ceremony of presenting the European Film Awards 2016 in Wrocław, the New Horizons Cinema in cooperation with the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 invites all viewers to an exceptional film event.

9 December (Friday) you are more than welcome to take part in a meeting with the most outstanding screenwriter and this year’s winner of the lifetime achievement Jean-Claude Carrière. Before the screening of Danton at 07:30 p.m. the creator will the viewers. Before the above-mentioned film by Andrzej Wajda is presented we will screen a short film entitled Happy Anniversary (dir. J.C. Carrière, Pierre Étaix). On Saturday, 10 December, from morning to evening, in a truly festive mode, we will be watching all the films nominated to the European Film Awards 2016: 42 full-length films – stories, documentaries, and animations as well as 15 short films (in three sets).

 

On the occasion of the screenings the film creators (actors, directors, screen writers, and other guests) will visit the cinema. At 07:30 p.m. the live broadcast of the award presenting gala taking place at the National Forum of Music in Wrocław will begin. It is going to be an exciting evening that will make you feel a true participant of the ceremony. Specially prepared snacks and film-related attractions will be waiting for the guests. The weekend finale involves a screening of the film awarded with the European Film Award that will take place on 11 December (Sunday) at 11:00 and – on the same day – two meetings with a German director and the Chairman of the European Film Academy in the person of Wim Wenders. The filmmaker will visit the cinema after the Polish première of his latest film The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez at 08:15 p.m. (presented in the competition at this year’s Venice International Film Festival) and after the screening of Pina on 11 December at 04:00 p.m.

9 December (Friday) on a day preceding the European Film Awards gala, a meeting with Jean-Claude Carrière – winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The programme includes a screening of Danton according to screenplay by Carrière and directed by Andrzej Wajda.

On 10 December (Saturday) all the films nominated to the European Film Awards 2016 will be screened. The repertoire includes over 40 titles and the screenings will take an entire day, from morning to evening.  Film guests will take part in the screenings – actors, directors, producers, and others.

Live broadcast from the European Film Awards 2016 gala straight from the National Forum of Music

On 10 December (Saturday) at 07:00 p.m. please join us at New Horizons Cinema for a live broadcast of the European Film Awards 2016 ceremony from the National Forum of music. The programme of the evening includes live coverage from the red carpet, interviews with the creators, and the gala. Maciej Stuhr, a Polish actor, is going to be the host of the evening. NHC is going to prepare some special snacks and film-related attractions for the viewers.
