The day of the Flag of the Republic of Poland and Polish people abroad

Today is the day of the Flag of the Republic of Poland. May 2 is also Day of Polish people living abroad, a day of about 20 million of Polish people living outside Poland.

Day of Polish People Abroad has been celebrated on May 2 since 2002. It was established by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland on the initiative of the Senate of the Republic of Poland ”in recognition of the achievements and contribution of Poles abroad to Poland’s independence, loyalty and attachment to Poland, and assisting Poland in the most difficult moments.” ( Journal of Laws from 2002, No. 37, item 331)

Day 2 May is also the day of the Flag of the Republic of Poland – introduced by the Act of February 20, 2004. White and red were officially adopted as national colors in 1831.

The national flag was officially adopted in 1919. The main Polish flag features two equally sized horizontal bands, the top one white and the bottom one red. But there is a variation to this flag. It has the same two bands, but the top white band also features the image of a crowned white eagle on a red background. This eagle is the coat of arms of the Republic of Poland.
