Polish ‘Ida’ Wins Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film
During the 87th Annual Academy Awards aired live from L.A Polish Ida won Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It is the first foreign language Oscar for Poland despite nine previous nominations and an impressive history of filmmaking, including such well-known directors as Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polanski.
Ida has been directed by Pawel Pawlikowski. It tells a story about Anna, a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland, who is on the verge of taking her vows when she discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of the Nazi occupation.
Pawlikowski said: “For me, the film is very Polish,” he said. “It’s about different versions of Polish-ness.”
Ida has already won many prestigious awards, including European Bafta.
