About 20,000 visitors witnessed the official opening of the 29th edition of Cultura Nova in Heerlen on the Van Grunsven square on Friday, August 23 performed by the mayor of Heerlen Emile Roemer and the minister of culture Ingrid van Engelshoven.
Ingrid Engelshoven said: “Culture is by everyone and for everyone. That is my main spearhead and Cultura Nova propagates that”. She added later on that ‘’You can really show new things here.”
The opening act was an open-air performance: Romeo and Juliet by Theater group from Maastricht accompanied by musicians, a choir and freerunners who also turned the flats and balconies around the square into a theater.
The 29th edition means more than 60 different companies that present 200 performances, concerts, films, workshops and lectures at 25 locations in and around Heerlen. Theater spectacles, music, dance, circus and theater; including a special program for young people.
Cultura Nova is a multidisciplinary summer festival offering
a varied programme for adults and children including theatre, dance, visual
arts and film. Artists and ensembles from various countries perform in various
– special – locations and stages throughout Parkstad Limburg. This year edition
takes place from August 23 till September 1.
