Predjama Castle and its hidden cave entrances
Slovenian Medieval Predjama Castle is the largest cave castle in the world, listed in the Guinness World Records and belongs to the 10 most fascinating castles in the world. For over 800 years it has been guarding a rock face, 123 metres high. Mysterious underground tunnels connect it with the cave directly beneath. The castle, which has also been a film location, offered refuge to its legendary owner Erazem Predjamski in the 15th century. This robber knight resisted a siege for over a year in his castle with its incredible appearance and location.
Under the castle you can visit The Cave, which is the second longest Slovenian show cave. It is situated on four floors and the total length of all the cave parts discovered so far is 14 kilometres. The cave according to archaeological discoveries was inhabited by humans in the Stone Age. Additionally, remains from the Roman times were found in the Stables, which is the entrance section to the cave. Visiting Cave is possible from May till September.
Knight tournaments and medieval days
Every summer, Predjama Castle is the location of Erazem’s Knight Tournament, in which knights, archers, swordsmen, and horsemen show their fighting abilities and the historic way of life at a knight’s encampment. Medieval days, markets, and camps are also organised by many other Slovenian towns with castles. Visitors can take a bus between Predjama Castle and Postojna cave, a must see in the vicinity of the castle. in order to see both of these attractions.
Postojna Cave
It is a fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries which has already reached 37 million in 200 years. The underground beauty can be admired by a special train.
During an hour and a half long guided tour, you learn about all of the most important karst features, you see the largest, 5-metre-high stalagmite known as Brilliant, you visit the oldest underground post office in the world and the most famous underground animal – the human fish (proteus).
