International Children’s Day and Universal Children’s Day

United Nations proclaimed November 20th as the Universal Children’s Day.
However, today-on June 1- in many CEE countries International Children’s Day is celebrated. The International Children’s Day has been introduced in Poland in the early fifties of the 20th century.

It is celebrated both privately and publically, various festivities and events are organized for kids and they receive also presents on this day.

The celebration of June 1st as the International Children’s Day was initiated by the International Federation of Democratic Women during their meeting in Fall 1949.

This organization was founded in 1945 in Paris and was associated with supporting a pro-Soviet communist front organization during the Cold War. It was later banned in France and moved to East Berlin and was supported there by East German communist regime.

Despite the fact that International Children’s Day stems from communist times it is a joyfull event which directs the attention to all the children and their well-being which is definitely relevant for everybody at any time.
