Independence of North Macedonia

On September 8 North Macedonia celebrates its Independence Day.

In 1991 a referendum for Independence was held. Then SR Macedonia became independent from Yugoslavia. On September 8, 1991, over 95.5% of the 75.8% turnout voters on the Referendum voted for the independence of the Republic Macedonia. On September 18, 1991 the first multi-party Macedonian Parliament issued the Declaration of the results of the referendum and a week later on September 25 the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Macedonian Parliament.

On November 17, 1991 the new Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia was adopted.
